Dryers are a convenient piece of equipment to have in your home—so much so that for most people, it’s hard to imagine life without them. As reliable as they can be, however, there are a few common issues that occasionally impact these machines. Below are five to watch for and what to do if you need dryer repair.

Common Issues With Dryers

1. No Heat

This problem depends on what kind of dryer you have. For gas versions, make sure the supply line valve is fully open. If it’s not, adjust it. If the problem persists, the valve may need to be replaced.

If your dryer is electric, a fuse may have blown and tripped the circuit breaker. This sometimes happens during a power surge, and you may notice that the drum still turns. The dryer won’t heat, however, if the thermal fuse is toast.

2. Strange Noises

Thumping or vibrating typically points to the unit not being on level ground. If that’s not the case, small items like buttons and coins may be stuck in the drum. Heavy, knotted clothing can also make the dryer rattle and rock. Make sure to unroll clothing as you place each piece inside.

3. Wet Clothing

Next, inspect the exhaust vent to ensure it’s opening and closing appropriately during a cycle. If moisture is trapped, it will malfunction. It may also be clogged with lint or debris from the outside, such as leaves.

Finally, check that the vent exhaust pipe is connected correctly. You may also be overloading the dryer and will need to split up your piles of clothing.

4. No Power

If the dryer won’t start, first check that the door is closed firmly. Next, make sure the relevant fuses and circuit breakers aren’t blown or tripped.

In some cases, the start knob is the problem. Lint and grime may be trapped behind it and stopping it from engaging when you need to start the cycle. Pop off the button and clean behind it.

5. Drum Issues

If the dryer is on but the drum won’t turn, the belt is the likely problem. When this component is worn down or damaged, the drum isn’t going to move. Call for dryer repair to have the part replaced.
