Winter road conditions make driving harder on everyone. However, when you’re handling a big rig, the risks of skidding out of control are even greater. Before ending up in a situation where you need to locate a semi towing service, read these tips for keeping trucks under control in adverse weather.

Cold-Weather Driving Tips for Big Rigs

1. Start Slow

Skidding out of control before leaving the parking lot might save you from paying a semi towing bill, but it’s still not ideal. Apply power slowly to prevent the wheels from spinning and sliding. Attempting an aggressive start will cause them to dig in and create icy patches. Get a feel for the road conditions, even when driving in familiar areas.

Test the braking distance before starting, and watch for weather changes that might increase stopping times. If the road becomes too hazardous, find a safe place to stop and wait for better conditions. Always schedule extra time to complete winter trips. This helps avoid rushing and provides a buffer in case of emergencies.

2. Avoid Braking on Curves

Because of the weight and momentum involved, it's difficult to correct your semi once it starts sliding. Reduce speed before entering curves and maintain a slow, steady pace until the road straightens out.

Watch carefully for curve warning signs and follow suggested speed adjustments. Finish braking before starting the turn and let all of the wheels roll freely until the truck and trailer are straight again. This prevents jack-knifing and misdirected momentum.

3. Downshift Early

When roads are icy and wet, longer stopping times are needed, and brakes can fail even faster. Trying to stop faster than conditions allow causes wheels to lock up and skid. Slamming on the brakes and riding them to a stop also makes them burn out.

At intersections and grades, where slowing and stopping are needed, downshift on approach. This allows engine braking to help control your speed. Aim to use the regular brakes as a back-up system, and avoid holding them for longer than three seconds. Slow and steady stops are key to preventing skidding while braking.
