Whatever you’re most looking forward to this holiday season, filing a home insurance claim probably isn't on the list. Considering all the dangers that the holidays pose, though, it’s not uncommon for insurers to be inundated with claims in early January. Thankfully, you can reduce the chances of having to file a claim over the holidays by following a few simple tips.

How to Keep Your Home Safe This Holiday Season

1. Choose the Tree With Care

If you prefer a natural Christmas tree, look for one that’s in good health. The fresher the tree, the less of a fire hazard it will be. Upon bringing it home, saw off an inch or two from the bottom, and place it in a stand that holds water.

If, on the other hand, your family likes artificial trees, buy one that’s fire resistant. If it already has lights, make sure they include a seal of approval from the Underwriters Laboratory (UL). And regardless of whether you get a natural or artificial tree, keep it away from all sources of heat, including fireplaces and radiators.

2. Use Candles With Caution

Candles can enhance your holiday decor, especially if you put up an artificial tree and still crave that fresh pine scent. Because candles contain an open flame, though, it’s important to exercise extreme caution when using them. Place them in secure holders that will not tip over, and keep them away from all flammable decorations.

3. Keep an Eye on the Fireplace home insurance

The mantle is a favorite spot for hanging holiday decorations. If you actually rely on your fireplace as a source of heat, though, never leave it unattended over the holidays, and avoid putting any combustibles near it. This includes garlands and stockings. And when it comes time to open presents, avoid tossing your crumpled wrapping paper in the fire. Floating embers could end up causing considerable damage that home insurance may or may not cover.

4. Hang Lights as Instructed

Read all warnings carefully before hanging twinkle lights, so you can be sure you're following the manufacturer’s guidelines. Ignoring clear instructions—like hanging indoor lights outside, for example—could end up causing a fire that your home insurance provider may not feel obligated to cover. When buying new lights, look for those that are UL approved, and when hanging old strands, check each one for fraying before plugging it into an outlet.

By following these suggestions, you may be able to avoid damages that could result in a large home insurance claim.
