Although asphalt is a highly durable material, it can still get damaged, especially during winter. Between the season’s freezing temperatures and increased precipitation, it's common for the material to experience premature wear and tear. Fortunately, there are a few steps you can take to protect your pavement in the upcoming months.

The Best Ways to Protect Asphalt During the Winter

1. Repair Cracks & Potholes

Repairing small potholes and cracks before winter fully hits will prevent water from flowing into the asphalt and freezing. When this occurs, the expansion creates significant fissures in the pavement, making the surface unsafe to drive or walk on. Additionally, if too many cracks form, you might face a problem known as “alligatoring.” This term refers to a complex group of breaks in the pavement resembling alligator scales. In most cases, this issue can only be fixed by fully replacing the asphalt.

2. Quickly Clear Away Debris

asphaltWhen it snows, use a shovel or plow to remove any buildup as soon as possible. This will keep the snow from melting and turning into pools of water, which could lead to cracks and pits. Additionally, try to prevent standing water after rain or sleet. To do this, consider installing trenches alongside the driveway. Another option is to level the asphalt to address any unevenness that might otherwise cause water to pool in the middle.

3. Be Careful When Using Deicers

Deicing products speed up the freeze-thaw cycle, increasing the chances of water seeping into cracks and potholes in your asphalt before you have a chance to address them. Furthermore, many of these products break down the binders in concrete, which can lead to premature wear and tear. If you do use a deicer, opt for one that won’t penetrate the asphalt, such as potassium chloride.
