Whether you experience complications from a root canal largely depends on the care regimen followed after the procedure. Eating the wrong foods, for example, or failing to keep the area clean, could impact the healing process. To avoid infections and discomfort, below are ways to care for a root canal and other practices to avoid.

Do:

Practice caution when using painkillers.

Archdale-North-Carolina-root-canalWhen the effect of the numbing agent subsides, you might use over-the-counter or prescription medication to eliminate the dull ache or shooting pain in your jaw. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist on intervals to take medication and the recommended dosage. This could prevent overdosing or dependency issues later. You should also be aware of possible side effects such as drowsiness and plan accordingly.

Brush & floss daily.

You should always brush teeth at least twice a day, and that’s especially true after a root canal. In addition to flossing at least once a day, this will prevent food residue and bacteria from contaminating the area. Gently brush the treated tooth, using a circular motion, to prevent pain and discomfort.

Don’t:

Forget to modify your diet.

Your jaw and tooth will be sore, so keep this in mind when shopping for foods to eat while you heal. Stay away from pretzels, apples, and other hard foods that could cause discomfort or complications. You should also refrain from eating sugary foods and drinking soda, as this will introduce harmful bacteria into your mouth.

Ignore persistent pain.

Each day following the procedure, pain should subside. If it doesn’t, consult your dentist immediately for help. Symptoms of distress can include intense pressure or pain that lasts for a few days as well as noticeable swelling. Discomfort could indicate the site needs to be professional cleaned more often.
