By maintaining your computer hardware and requesting expert computer repair when you need it, you should be able to keep your machine working well for many years. Although fixing your computer is usually a job for a professional, you can clean your PC to help extend its life. Below is a guide to maintaining your hardware.

External Parts

Your mouse, keyboard, and monitor are exposed to dust and other particles that make them dirty. To clean these surfaces, you should first make a 50/50 white vinegar to water solution in a spray bottle. Spray this solution onto a soft cloth (microfiber is best) and use the cloth to wipe down all surfaces. Be careful not to over-wet the cloth, as excess liquid can cause issues if it seeps into your keyboard, mouse, or monitor. Be sure that all devices are turned off before cleaning so that you don’t accidentally click and delete a file or change a setting while wiping.

Use a Q-tip to clean between keys. Some keyboards have removable keys, which you can take out by carefully using a flathead screwdriver. This will allow you to clean more thoroughly. If you would prefer not to take apart the keyboard, turn it upside down and lightly tap the edge on the palm of your hand. This will knock out any loose particles that may be stuck inside.

The Fans

Internal Green Fans

The best way to clean your case fans, heat sink fans, and graphics card fans is to use compressed air. Be sure to fully open the case before you begin cleaning. This will ensure that dust will leave the case rather than being blown into another part of the computer.

For more intensive cleaning, you can use isopropyl alcohol on a Q-tip to wipe the blades. You could also remove fans for better access if you know how to do it safely.
