Sebum is a natural oil that lubricates the skin and hair at the scalp. Without enough of it, your hair becomes dry, causing itching, irritation, and flaking. If you have a dry scalp, there are many salon treatments designed to soothe it. Here are a few ways to avoid itchiness between appointments.

How to Care for a Dry Scalp

1. Avoid Scratching

If you’re scratching your head trying to figure out this problem, stop doing that immediately. When your skin itches and flakes, it’s a sign that your skin’s outer moisture barrier is damaged. Scratching can break the skin, worsening the problem. If your scalp feels itchy, simply tap it gently instead.

2. Wash With Cold Water

salonWhen you wash your hair, you’re not only removing dirt, dust, and flakes, but also the oils from the scalp. The temperature of the water you use matters. If it’s too hot, it will strip your hair and scalp of moisturizing sebum.

For the best results, use cold or lukewarm water, which will close the pores of the scalp and the cuticles of the hair, sealing in moisture.

3. Replace Harsh Shampoos

Many shampoos contain harsh, synthetic chemicals called sulfates, including sodium laureth sulfate. Put simply, these are foaming agents that wash away grime, oil, and dead skin cells. However, if your scalp is sensitive, these ingredients can strip it of too much sebum, resulting in dryness and flaking.

To avoid this, opt for sulfate-free shampoos. These generally contain much gentler, natural surfactants, like coconut and essential oils.
